The Rise of Brand Rural
Have you noticed how "Rural" is popping up in brands everywhere? I'm all for it.
There was a time, when I couldn’t tell you about my city credentials quick enough. But a decade after moving to rural Victora, the sentiment has completely flipped and now I put my rural credentials first.
I have written about the concept of ‘geographical narcissism’ – it’s the idea that metropolitan experience is more valuable than rural experience. It’s often reinforced by headquarters of companies and organisations, being based in the cities (so it’s where you go for promotion).
Then there’s its sinister ‘cousin’: “urbansplaining”. This is a term I recently came across, which encapsulates that feeling when people in the city tell you in the country, what you need.
But, here comes “Brand Rural” - I've outlined my theory of the 3 driving factors which have led to this momentous and welcome change over the past decade
Going well outside my ‘comfort zone’ - a personal story
I’m not sure why this podcasting, “indoor farmer” decided to go camping for two weeks. No tech and no showers. Going camping is no big deal and enjoyable, for many. Or so I had been told.
But for me… well, we were given a whistle at the start (for emergencies) and I promptly looped it around my wrist. You don’t plan on getting lost, I thought. I was put in a team with an ex-army guy and I told him, he was responsible for my survival. All bases covered.
So, this adventure I had embarked on in the beautiful NSW scrub, was part of the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation’s 15 month flagship program. We’re cohort 31… a bunch of strangers thrown together and many of us will become lifelong friends.
